Are you looking into building a custom home for you and your family? It’s great to move into a pre-built home with history, but if you’re looking for a lifestyle that’s tailored to you you might want to consider going custom!
Building a custom home is great but there’s a process involved. It’s not as easy as just sending a mood board to a builder and saying “good luck!”
There are a few things that you’re going to want to keep in mind as you move through it, especially if it’s your first time doing this.
Keep reading for 3 considerations you’re going to want to make when you’re building your first home.
1. Pick the Right Spot
This is your custom home so you get to decide where to build it (within reason). You’re spending a lot of money so give yourself time to make this decision.
Make a list of the things that you’re looking for in your new plot of land as well as what’s within your budget. Are you looking to be in a neighborhood or out on your own somewhere? Do you want space for a huge lawn or are you keeping it small?
What are the utilities like (if they’re even present?)?
You need to make sure this land is buildable, roomy enough for your home, and in a place that you want to live in for the foreseeable future.
2. Not All Homes Are Alike
Be creative with your house. It’s easy to fit into the mold, but when you’re building your creativity can stretch as far as your budget.
Look at different styles of homes to see which one suits you. This is also helpful in the property-searching stage because you may have to have a “certain look” to fit into a neighborhood.
This is also the time to decide what your “must-haves” are in your home (aside from the basics). Do you want an indoor jacuzzi area? What about a bar? Maybe you’ve always dreamed of having a library loft. You can have these things when you’re building a custom home.
3. Choose Your Builder Carefully
You want to take your time when you’re choosing a builder for your custom home. Not everyone is suited for every style of house and that’s okay! But looking at a portfolio or gallery of completed projects will give you a good idea of what a builder is capable of.
Talk with your builder before making a commitment. You want someone that’s open to your ideas and communicative enough to make you feel comfortable. You’re going to be working together for a while.
Make sure this builder knows what you want both aesthetic and function-wise. Are they experienced in energy-saving homes? Do they know how to build the Art-deco house of your dreams?
This is a crucial decision.
Building a Custom Home? You’ve Got Big Decisions to Make!
Building a custom home is exciting and you probably want to get started right away. We understand, but we also know how important it is to take your time so you get the house you’re dreaming of.
Don’t let yourself get lost in the idea of your dream home and make beginner mistakes. Make your dream a reality.
