Rep. Allen West, R-Fort Lauderdale, is standing by comments he made during a town hall a few days ago, in which he claimed up to 80 U.S. House Democrats are members of the Communist Party.
After considerable outrage from the left and extensive media coverage of his words, West is now turning the situation into a fundraising pitch, The Miami Herald reports. In an email to supporters, West wrote:
You know I am not afraid to speak the truth.
That’s why I’m the number one target of liberals and their friends in the media who are going completely nuts about my comments at a recent Townhall meeting. I need your help to fight back and stand up against the corrupt liberal media as they attempt cover for their left-wing allies.
In response to a question about Marxists in Congress, I called out the Congressional Progressive Caucus for their extreme left-wing positions. I stand by the point of my comments and I need you to stand with me today by making a contribution of $10 or more.
Patrick Murphy, West’s opponent in his upcoming reelection campaign, raised $350,000 in the first three months of this year — and has a total of $1 million in his coffers to take on West.
