The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report issued today indicates that total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 117,000 in July, and the unemployment rate was “little changed at 9.1 percent.” The private sector added 154,000 jobs, while government employment lost 37,000 jobs.

The report adds that the health care industry added 31,000 jobs and retail trade added 26,000, while employment in construction, transportation and warehousing, information, financial activities, and leisure and hospitality changed little.

The Labor Statistics report also indicates that the number of unemployed persons (13.9 million) changed little in July, while the labor force was 153.2 million.

The July report adds:

  • The unemployment rate for adult men is 9 percent, adult women 7.9 percent, teenagers 25 percent, whites 8.1 percent, blacks 15.9 percent, and Hispanics 11.3 percent.
  • The number of persons unemployed for less than five weeks declined by 387,000.
  • The number of those jobless for 27 weeks or more is 6.2 million. That number changed little over the month and accounted for 44.4 percent of the unemployed.
  • The number of persons employed part-time for economic reasons (sometimes referred to as involuntary part-time workers) remained mostly unchanged at 8.4 million.

The Labor Statistics June report indicated that employment remained essentially unchanged in June and that the unemployment (9.2 percent) rate showed very little change.

Florida’s unemployment rate for June held steady, at 10.6 percent, a reminder that the economic recovery remains fragile and slow. The numbers released today show 982,000 Floridians are still out of work, though the state has gained 85,500 jobs since the beginning of the year.
