Regardless of whether you are traveling by plane, train, our automobile, it is important to prepare for your trip so you can stay as healthy as possible.

In the days leading up to your trip (and during your trip for that matter) make sure to drink plenty of water to help strengthen your immune system. In addition, airplane air is very dry, which means dehydration happens faster than under normal circumstances. It is recommended to drink eight ounces of water for every hour you are in the air to avoid that groggy and jetlagged feeling when you arrive at your destination.

Likewise, a healthy diet will boost your immune system, which will help you fend off illnesses. A balanced diet is a worthwhile investment in good health for the long-term.

Make sure to get enough sleep. Not only does sleep give you energy for the day, but it contributes to a strong immune system. About eight hours of sleep a night should do it, appropriately preparing you for your journey.

Make sure you have all of your essential items ready to go before you leave. At the very least, you will need a mask, a face shield (or glasses or goggles to protect your eyes), hand sanitizer, and sanitizing wipes to clean high-touch surfaces for staying healthy while traveling.

Tips for Traveling Alone for Pleasure

When it comes to traveling during a pandemic and maintaining a safe social distance, traveling solo is probably your best bet. Consider choosing a destination you can reach by car to limit exposure to others.

Book a rental home instead of a hotel because it will minimize your contact with other guests. Disinfect everything possible upon arrival—all surfaces, light switches, remote controls, doorknobs, etc. If you can, bring your own bedding and towels.

Spend time outside to avoid closed spaces with other people. Consider going to the beach or on a hiking trip.

Check the number of cases at your destination prior to departure. If the case count is high, consider staying where you are and scheduling virtual meetings.

If you can, drive to your destination. If flying is your only option, wear a mask and eye protection, and sanitize all surfaces you might touch including the TV screen and the seatbelt. Wash your hands regularly.

If you stay at a hotel, wash your hands upon arrival and disinfect all of the surfaces in the room (don’t forget the doorknobs, light switches, and TV remote). If possible, bring your own pillowcase and linens or ask the hotel for unopened supplies.

Tips for Traveling with a Toddler

Traveling with a toddler comes with challenges under normal circumstances. Now that we are in the middle of a pandemic, these challenges have multiplied. There are, however, some tips and tricks for traveling more safely and minimizing risks.

First of all, pack lots of disinfectant hand wash and wipes. As you know, toddlers touch everything, but you can take back some control by proactively wiping down surfaces they might touch.

Bring lots of activities. Keeping them entertained in their seats will reduce the people they are in contact with and the dirty surfaces that are within their reach. So keep them as busy as possible with coloring books, toys, games, books, and maybe even some screen time.

Don’t bring too many things they can drag around with them or leave in germ-ridden places. Blankets and stuffed animals, for example, can pick up dirt, so consider leaving them behind or zipped up in a suitcase.

Find a mask with fun colors and designs for your little one. If it looks cool, they will be more likely to keep it on.

If you’re still not ready to fly, there are many alternatives that don’t involve quite so many people in such a small space and will help you in your quest of staying healthy while traveling.

Prepare some food, pack your trunk, and hop in the car. If you want to avoid hotels, consider camping! You can even take a day trip, ending up back at your clean virus-free home by the end of the day.

Take your home on the go to avoid hotels and eating out. Whether you make a cross-country trip or decide to explore your surrounding area, an RV is a great way to stay safe and isolated while exploring new places and enjoying nature.

Still not convinced to leave your home amidst the pandemic? Travel virtually! Social distancing has inspired innovation in many industries, including the travel industry.

There are numerous resources that will allow you to travel the world through photos, videos, virtual museum visits, etc. from the comfort and safety of your couch.
