1. Simple Suture
For beginners, this technique should be mastered to ensure safe and effective suturing. This includes the use of the right suture material, use of the right knot, use of the right needle, use of the right technique, and use of the right knot-tying device.
The right suture material should be chosen according to the nature of the wound and the body part that needs to be repaired.
2.Ā Horizontal Mattress
To perform the horizontal mattress stitch, the needle should be threaded and pushed through the base of the wound and out of the other side. After that, the needle should come back to the same side as before and should go through the same point at a slightly different angle.
To complete this stitch, the needle should go in the same direction as before and come out to the far side. This should repeat in a criss-cross pattern until the wound has been closed securely.
3.Ā Vertical Mattress
Beginners must practice this routinely to be able to master it. First, a needle with a long thread is inserted at the area of injury after estimating the size of the wound and amount of stitches. Second, a bite should be taken above and below the injury area.
Third, the thread should be looped through to form a knot. Fourth, the needle should be inserted parallel to the wound at a 20° angle for a successful stitch.
Also, after the first loop, the thread should be pulled upwards and looped again in the opposite direction creating a āmattress-likeā form with the stitches and thread.
4. Buried Knot
With a suture kit, a buried knot can be done by a suture that is passed through tissue so that the knot is buried underneath the skinās surface, which is essential for repairs to the mouth and oropharynx.
This technique is used to help reduce tissue reaction and to make a secure knot for wound closure.
5.Ā Interrupted Suture
Interrupted sutures are the most common and versatile goal of suturing techniques for beginners to learn and practice. This method involves creating multiple sutures connected to the wound edges, one at a time.
To perform an interrupted suture,Ā make a series of small bites in the wound, leaving enough space between the bites to tie a knot.
Pull the suture around the wound’s edge and create an appropriate knot, then tie off the first suture in an alternating fashion after completely encircling the wound with one suture. Continue the interrupted sutures in a uniform pattern until the wound is secure.
