Seven members of Florida’s U.S. congressional delegation have signed on as cosponsors of the Birthright Citizenship Act of 2011, an effort to limit the 14th Amendment’s provision that all those born in the U.S. automatically become American citizens. #
According to a Tea Party Manatee newsletter, NumbersUSA, whose goal is “lower immigration levels,” is closely tracking “5 GREAT Immigration-Reduction Bills that would resolve the majority of our country’s immigration problems,” one of which is the Birthright Citizenship Act, introduced by GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa. #
In January, a group called State Legislators for Legal Immigration announced its effort to reform the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which states that “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.” Florida Reps. William Snyder, Ray Pilon, and Gayle Harrell (all Republicans) are listed as participants on the State Legislators for Legal Immigration website. #
Republican U.S. Reps. Sandy Adams, Jeff Miller, Richard Nugent, Bill Posey, Dennis Ross, Cliff Stearns, and Allen West have all co-sponsored the bill filed by King. #
