We might think of our neighborhood–or America as a whole–as a safe place.
But consider these facts:
- Every 19 seconds, someone is the victim of violent crime.
- Every 5 minutes, someone is the victim of rape.
- Every 24 minutes, someone is murdered.
Another sobering fact? Many of the “someones” in the above scenarios are women.
Safety and self-protection is something every woman needs to take seriously. Read on to learn five expert safety tips for women.

1. Practice Awareness
Most people think of self-defense techniques as the “first” line of defense in keeping yourself safe.
In reality, though, it’s the last option.
By the time you need to use self-defense tactics, it may already be too late. A much smarter idea is to practice awareness of your surroundings–before an attacker gets too close.
If you’re walking alone–especially at night–remain hyper-aware of your surroundings. Is there an unmarked van parked beside your car? Do you sense someone is following you?
Don’t ignore those gut feelings or brush them off as paranoia. The more aware you are of your surroundings, the safer you’ll remain.
2. Take a Self-Defense Course
With that said, it’s never a terrible idea to be prepared for the worst-case scenario.
Every woman should have at least a basic idea of how to physically defend herself. This is something you can learn in a one-day or a weekend course.
There’s also an array of self-defense gadgets you can buy and carry with you. Many of them fold up small but can pack a powerful punch, like the telescopic steel baton from TBOTECH.
3. Use Common Sense
We already touched on awareness, but let’s talk about another habit you should practice–common sense.
Even if you live in a relatively “safe” area, never assume there’s no danger.
Is your car the last one in the parking lot or garage? Take a good look underneath before you approach. Better yet, have a security guard escort you to your vehicle if it’s late at night.
What if you reach your car and realize there’s a flat tire? Return immediately to the store or restaurant you came from and call for help. Never accept “help” from a passerby–he (or she) could be a predator.
4. ALWAYS Try to Escape
What if, despite your best efforts, you’re confronted by an assailant? What if he’s intent on forcing you into a car, building, or alley?
Even if promises not to hurt you if you cooperate, don’t believe it. You are much more likely to be hurt or killed if you leave the scene with him than if you try to escape.
You have a very small window of time to try to save yourself. Run, fight back, scream for help, or throw something. Attract attention and make noise any way you can–you never know who’s close enough to hear you.
