The execution of Manuel Valle is set for Aug. 2, under the first death warrant signed by Gov. Rick Scott.

A jury recommended sentencing him to death in 1981 by a 9-3 vote for murdering a Coral Gables police officer in 1978. He stretched the case over decades with a series of appeals, which the United States Supreme Court repeatedly declined to hear.
