If you take away the fear-mongering in the media, you might be able to think about the numerous doors that will open for you by joining the military.
So keep on reading to learn the top 10 reasons to join the military, and whether it would suit your goals in life.
1. One of the Most Powerful Reasons to Join Military: Duty and Patriotism
Alright, you had to know this one was coming.
There is a reason why joining the military is called military service. At its core, being part of the military is all about serving your fellow Americans and your country. It’s about being part of a huge entity and working towards the greater good with your fellow countrymen and women.
2. Joining a Community
And not just any community, but one of the world’s oldest clubs.
Being a veteran gives you a sort of membership to a supportive community, where you can gain acceptance, find employment, as well as find mentors along the way.
It’s a membership for life that no one can take away from you, with numerous coin ideas and challenges.
3. Employment Opportunities
You’ll find job opportunities with the military regardless of the eternal see-saw of the US economy.
The employment levels in the military aren’t affected by the problems that plague the regular economy, from rising costs, stagnant wages, and outsourcing efforts.
The military will continuously offer jobs for those who qualify academically and medically with clean records.
4. Pay and Benefits
Now, no one would think about enlisting to get rich. It simply doesn’t match with the core ideology of service. However, that doesn’t mean that the military doesn’t pay well.
It provides a new second lieutenant with a starting salary of $36,000 a year with added full benefits, not taking into account the monthly allowances of up to $3,000 depending on where they’re stationed.
Usually, an enlisted person will start getting around $20,000 a year plus full benefits, not taking into account the added monthly allowances of up to $1,500.
In addition, student loans can be waived by up to $65,000, and you can get a full pension after serving 20 years or more.
For retirement, the pay can reach around 50 to 70% of the average of your last three years base salary. And in some cases, you can receive more than 75% of your base pay.
There is the new Blended Retirement System, which is applicable for all members enlisting after January 2, 2018. This plan offers an equivalent to the regular civilian 401K plan, it’s called Thrift Savings Plan and it takes contributions of up to 5% of your base salary.
In blunt terms, you won’t get rich. But, you’ll have every avenue to be comfortable financially.
5. Full Medical Coverage
And not just for you. It’ll be available for you and your family members.
Once you join the military, you’ll be immediately eligible for full health care benefits as well as your immediate family members.
In addition, if you stay until retirement, you can take these benefits with you (and for your family as well) when you leave.
6. Learning New Skills
Joining the military doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ll be solely involved in combat training.
The military gives advanced training in numerous fields —technical and otherwise—and offers additional training opportunities when you’re off-duty.
As a matter of fact, many military members take college courses that are usually paid for via tuition assistance. You can use these training opportunities to advance within your chosen career field and prepare for certifications or degrees.
7. Leadership Opportunites
You know how employers always skim your resume and don’t call back?
Lacking skills, experience or leadership positions might have something to do with it.
Having military leadership experience and skills can boost your resume to the top of the pile and give you an edge above the competition, regardless of your field of choice.
8. Travel and Vacation Time
The military bases all around the world provide a great opportunity for travel for you and your family.
As your off-duty time is yours to do with as you please, you can use them to travel the world. Ordinarily, the military gives you 30 days of paid leave per year, not taking into account federal holidays.
You can also make use of the multiple military resorts where base lodging is available in places like Hale Koa in Hawaii other resorts in Japan, Germany, and South Korea.
To make things even better, you may be able to jump on a military hop and fly for free if there are available seats.
Basically, a military hop is a scheduled flight that can take on passengers depending on availability. These tickets will either cost you pennies or be completely free of charge.
9. Education After Military Service
We talked a lot about the opportunities available to you while being an active military member, yet the benefits don’t stop after you leave.
You can now benefit from the new GI Bill. It pays veterans who served a minimum of 36 months a living stipend on a monthly basis as well as covering full tuition for college.
10. VA Loans for Homes
Veteran Affairs provides veterans with loans to purchase houses with no down payment. And, what makes this offer even sweeter is the waiving of numerous purchasing fees.
You can use this service whether you’re still serving, or after you’ve left the service.
