For the past 4 weeks straight one of my coaching clients has exercised diligently, cut out sugar 98% of the time and eaten a healthy Paleo diet consistently that we developed for her lifestyle. Sheâs even incorporated yoga to relieve stress and help balance her proclivity for intense workouts.
In a session, she confessed that she feels amazing. In fact, she tells me sheâs felt better, more connected, and happier than she can remember feeling in a long time, BUT âŠ
ââŠSummerâs coming. And there will be swimsuits. And my husband hid my scale so I canât weigh myself. I have no way of knowing if the past 4 weeks have paid off or not!â I could just hear her voice soaked in fear and panic.
I coaxed her to reflectâŠ
âSure, my clothes are fitting looser, Iâm stronger, sleeping better, and have begun to develop a more intuitive relationship with food, exercise, and rest, but what if Iâm actually gaining weight? What if this whole âpaying attention to your needsâ isnât working? What if I just go back to super intense workouts and slash my calories so I can be âreadyâ for summer??â
Sound familiar?
If so, you need to hear this: You have mistakenly written off your peace, happiness, fitness, and most likely your worth in this world to a number on a scale.
⊠A number that tells you nothing about the effort, energy, kindness, awareness, or growth youâve experienced over the course of your life.
⊠A number that tells you nothing about the constant hormonal fluctuations, immune responses, and regeneration your body incurs to achieve balance and proper function on a daily basis.
⊠A number that knows nothing of the joy, pain, delight, stress, sorrow, or pleasure youâve faced in your life.
Stop giving power to the scale and you will break free from the Dementors in your mind. If youâve read Harry Potter, or seen the movies then you may recognize the devastating force of a Dementor.
I know, I used to struggle with this very thing:
Dementors consume happiness, creating an ambiance of coldness, darkness, misery, and despair. Their power to drain happiness and hope from your awareness prevents your ability to escape your own mental prison.
When you tie your success to a number on a scale you invite Demented thinking that traps you in a never-ending battle, literally sucking the joy, hope, and motivation right out of you. If the number isnât just right it leaves you in a panic; searching for the latest and greatest quick fix or returning to old habits that end up destroying your health for the sake of the weight youâve deemed acceptable.
Stop giving away your power. Stop reducing your worth, success, and fitness level to a number on a scale.
In Harry Potterâs case, he was able to repel Dementors by cultivating a positive force that acted like a shield protecting him from the destruction of negativity.
You, too, can protect yourself by healing your inner monologue. By building thoughts and language that edify your spirit and spark you to live life with passion, grace, and positivity toward every experience.
When you untether yourself from the number on the scale, you will reclaim the self-worth that has always existed. You will accept yourself as the whole, dynamic, evolving, and beautiful human being that you are! Demented thinking will no longer be acceptable.
So, what does the number on the scale say about you? Absolutely nothing.
If this article resonates with you and you struggle to stop weighing yourself, I encourage you to smash your scale. Yep, smash it with a hammer or a baseball bat or slam it into the concrete on your driveway⊠Here, Iâll show you how itâs done!
In Love & Gratitude,
Missi Holt
