Though it’s almost impossible to see any upside in the recent gulf oil disaster (an oil spill that has claimed the lives and habitats of thousands of various flora and fauna, as well as the jobs of hundreds of area fishermen), the spill has at least a glimmer of a silver lining, according to Gov. Charlie Crist: job creation.

Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs is an initiative of Employ Florida Marketplace, a job-search site created in 2005 as a tool for those looking for work in the state’s harsh economic climate. The site acts as a collective job database of sorts, compiling openings from staffings agencies and other job sites.

The Florida Gulf Recovery arm of Florida Marketplace lists jobs expressly created as a result of the April 20 oil spill and is a partnership of the Agency for Workforce Innovation, Workforce Florida and Florida’s 24 Regional Workforce Boards. All jobs on the site are verified by local Regional Workforce Boards.

Though many of the jobs listed on the site are for manual labor and cleanup positions, there are several “green job” openings, as well — such as a Lead Safety Representative in Pensacola.

According to a June 17 press release, the site will allow job seekers “to locate and apply for positions created in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.”

Crist expressed his intentions for the site in the press release: “Our beautiful Sunshine State remains open for business, and Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs is the latest example of our coordinated efforts to ensure preparedness and strengthen our economy.”
