South Florida immigrant advocates issued a pledge Friday to the Miami-Dade County legislative delegation, one day after the House Economic Affairs Committee approved immigration-enforcement bill 7089. #
The pledge states that either the “Arizona light” S.B. 2040 or the “Arizona heavy” of H.B. 7089 would harm the social fabric of our community, harm the state’s economy and create a huge financial burden for state and local governments by having local law enforcement take on the task of enforcing federal immigration law. #
According to a press release issued Friday by We Are Florida!: #
So far, 13 out of 24 legislators have expressed their opposition to these bills. As of today, 7 signed the pledge to vote against SB 2040 and HB 7089 or any Arizona-inspired immigration legislation in Florida’s legislature. Other 6 have already committed verbally to oppose or have already voted against these bills in Committee. #
We Are Florida! is a campaign launched by the Florida Immigrant Coalition that seeks to change the debate around immigration in Florida: “From being seen as a problem, to providing solutions. From feeling shame to pride.” #
The campaign has the support of local, state, and national immigrant, social justice, labor, and religious organizations that includes the NAACP, National Immigration Forum, and National Day Laborer Organizing Network. #
Natalia Jaramillo, communication associate of We Are Florida!, told The Florida Independent that state Rep. Carlos Lopez-Cantera, R-Miami, majority leader of the House and chair of the Miami-Dade delegation, has yet to take a position on H.B. 7089. #
Jaramillo highlighted the fact that South Florida GOP Reps. Frank Artiles and Jeannette Nuñez voted against HB 7089. #
