In 2020, the average person bought 53 gifts for their loved ones.

A gift basket is one way of giving that’s a little different than a traditional gift. These baskets can be given for any occasion and they’re usually delivered to the recipient at home or work.

The thing that makes them stand out is how they’re wrapped. Instead of one item wrapped in opaque paper, a gift basket contains many small gifts placed in a basket or box and then wrapped in translucent paper, like cellophane.

But knowing how to wrap a gift basket with cellophane is a skill. If you don’t know where to start, follow this step-by-step guide.

What You Need to Wrap a Gift Basket with Cellophane

Before you start wrapping your gift basket, you need the right tools. Gathering these beforehand will save you time.

To start, you’ll need:

  • Cellophane
  • Tape
  • Scissors
  • Twist tie
  • Bow

Of course, you’ll first need the finished gift basket, filled with gifts for Christmas, for a birthday, or with sympathy gifts for men. Make sure nothing is sticking out of the side too much. Any shape or size basket will be fine, just be sure to have enough cellophane for the job.

Sizing and Cutting

Place the basket in the middle of the sheet of cellophane. Whatever the size of the basket you’re using, you’ll need triple the amount of cellophane. Make sure that the basket is in the middle on all sides, centered on the right, left, top, and bottom.

Make sure there’s about one foot of cellophane on the front and back of the basket. This is to ensure you can cover the front and back as well as have room to make frills at the top. When that’s all measured, cut the cellophane.

From here, lift up both the front and back sections of the cellophane and allow them to meet at the top. You can then take the parts of the cellophane still touching the surface you’re wrapping on, and bring them up to the sides of the basket.

Now you want to fold the back edges toward the front and vice-versa. The two flaps on the side can be creased at the bottom edges to bring them back in. Then you’ll fold the front flaps over the back, which creates a V-shape on the sides (like a traditional gift wrap) and these can be secured with tape.

Cinch all of the cellophane at the top of the basket and secure it with a twist tie. Play around and fluff it out to make it look pretty but remember that cellophane is intended to look a bit messy, so it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can then wrap your bow around the twist tie to finish it off.
