Are you about to send an important package in the mail? Are you nervous about the package getting to its location safely and securely?
While mailing a package seems like an easy process, there are a lot of simple mistakes that you can make that can jeopardize the chances of that package getting safely to its intended location.
In fact, each day, more than 1.7 million packages seemingly disappear without explanation. In major cities, this accounts for about 1 in 10 packages.
So, how do you make sure your package arrives safely and soundly?
Check out this guide to discover how to mail a package safely and securely
Pick the Right Box Size
First things first, you need to make sure you pick the right sized box for your package.
While it may seem like a good idea to ship your item in an extra-large box if it’s fragile, this will cause you to incur unnecessary shipping and handling charges.
Ideally, you want to choose a box that allows about two inches of space around all sides of the package. This should be enough room to keep the item safe and to keep the shipping cost-effective.
Also, if you’re mailing the item to a customer, make sure you arrange them in the box in an appealing way. You want to wow your customers when they open your box, so make sure you create a pleasant unboxing experience and don’t just throw everything in there haphazardly.
Protect Your Item With Bubble Wrap
If your item is breakable, it’s very important that you add layers of bubble wrap to the package.
Once the item has been wrapped in bubble wrap, then place it in a box that’s full of packing peanuts. If the item is especially fragile, we also suggest covering it in a layer of paper and then securing the paper with a piece of Scotch tape.
You may need to repeat this process several times until you’re sure that the item is totally secure.
Request Tracking Information
Locating a lost item in the mail can be a huge headache.
To make sure you know where your item is at all times, it’s very important that you request tracking information when shipping. Luckily, USPS and most shipping centers automatically provide you with this information on your receipt.

Take Care When Addressing the Package
When shipping an item in a box, the address format is the same format you use on an envelope.
Make sure you print or write your addresses clearly, as you don’t want sloppy handwriting to be the reason your package doesn’t arrive on time. If you choose to write out the address, make sure you choose an ink that doesn’t smear, and don’t forget to include your zip code and return address.
