Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi has announced that Florida is joining a suit against the EPA’s Cross-State Air Pollution rule, which aims to protect against fine particle pollution. Bondi briefly mentioned the suit during a speech she gave at Saturday’s Presidency 5 event, held in Orlando.
The rule would require 27 states to significantly improve air quality by reducing power plant emissions that cross state lines, and is scheduled to go into effect in January 2012.
Florida will join six other states (including Nebraska) in the suit against the EPA, an agency that has drawn harsh criticism in recent months from many within the GOP. The suit alleges that the costs of implementing the rule will far outweigh the benefits, which EPA says would be realized in improvements to human health.
“Once again the EPA has imposed costly regulations on Florida based on a flawed process and without first working cooperatively with our state,” Bondi said in a press release. “We will continue to protect Florida consumers and businesses from unnecessary and costly federal regulation.”
