A statement from the office of state Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, says that his resolution to honor pregnancy resource centers this month is meant to honor “the compassionate people who work in these centers,” who “truly believe in the value of human life.”

The resolution was adopted on Tuesday.

According to a statement, Fasano’s office says:

A key role resource centers play is to make women aware that adoption is an option that is not always known or considered by the mother during the time of the unplanned pregnancy. Additionally, many of the centers are capable of providing medical services, counseling, and other care for the women in need. Senator Fasano recognizes that those centers not capable of providing the full scope of the medical services a woman may need will refer the women to qualified medical care providers. By adopting this resolution Senator Fasano, and the Senate as a whole, recognizes that the people who work and volunteer in pregnancy resource centers deserve to be recognized, thus the naming of January, 2012 as Pregnancy Resource Center Month.

Pregnancy resource centers, often referred to as “crisis pregnancy centers” or “CPCs,” have long been criticized by reproductive rights groups who consider them misleading. Part of the work CPCs do is convincing women to choose adoption over abortion when facing an unplanned pregnancy. However, Fasano’s office said in his statement that the “centers strive to meet the physical, psychological, emotional, and spiritual needs of the women and men who seek assistance.”

In Florida, some of these centers receive tax dollars. Last year, the state’s CPC network received $2 million in taxpayer funds — a fixed amount it has received each of the past six years.
