Being able to defend oneself against an attack isn’t at the forefront of most people’s worries. With mass shootings, hurricanes, and other natural disasters becoming more part of everyday existence, personal attacks and break-ins seem to be on the backburner.
It’s important to be prepared for anything, so today we’re going to look at some self-defense techniques that everyone should know in order to stay safe. You can never be too careful when you’re out and about, so learn a few of these and you’ll be prepared for the worst.
5 Self-Defense Techniques Everyone Should Know

Not everyone is comfortable carrying a gun, however. Here are five self-defense techniques that you employ without the use of a weapon.
1. Vulnerable Points
Learning which spots are most vulnerable on an attacker will give you the upper hand. The eyes, throat, nose, chest, groin, and knees are the six places you should attack first.
We’ll go over how you can use these areas against your attacker next, but remain calm and mindful of these areas and when you can attack them.
2. First Strike
If you’re attacked by surprise, then you need to think quickly in order to free yourself and make a getaway. Likely, the attacker will grab on to you in this scenario, so you need to make a quick counterattack.
When your hands are free, try the following moves.
- Use both your hands to grab the attacker’s fingers and bend the wrist back.
- Poke or punch the attacker right in the Adam’s apple or throat area.
- Go for the groin with your fist or knee.
All of these will hopefully disorient the attacker long enough for you to get away quickly and yell for help.
3. How Were You Grabbed?
If you were grabbed from the front, your attacker might have your arms pinned to your sides. When this happens, wiggle your arms forward so that you can connect your hands in front of your pelvis. Then, use your forehead to hit the attacker in the nose.
When you are grabbed from the back, use a similar technique with your head. Try and use the back of your head to connect with the attacker’s nose, but the main objective is to have their leg move forward. When this happens, quickly bend forward and pull the leg up so that they lose balance.
4. Freeing Your Arms
Often, an attacker will try to hold on to your arms so that you can’t attack with them. If they’ve done this, remember to rotate your wrist towards their thumb so that you loosen the grip.
Pull as hard as you can when you twist your arm and repeat this until it works. If the grip is tight, don’t forget to use your head to hit their nose and your knees to go for the groin.
5. Backed Against a Wall
During break-ins or back-alley attacks, the perpetrator will often try to back a victim against a wall. When you’re cornered, it’s important to remember the vulnerable areas from the first tip.
If the attacker has you cornered with both arms raised, straighten out your palms and go straight for the armpits. If just one arm is raised, you can also use the head-butt or punch them in the neck or groin. This should shock them and give you time to run away.
Practice Makes Perfect
Self-defense classes are a great way to practice these techniques and even learn a few more to keep you safe. We live in a world that is, unfortunately, full of violent scum bags. Hopefully, you never have to use any of these self-defense techniques or a firearm, but it’s better to be prepared than to be caught off-guard.
