Perhaps you’ve read or heard before that daily shampooing isn’t necessary.
However, if you ask medical professionals, they’ll tell you that you don’t need shampoo if your hair and scalp are generally healthy. Just washing it is enough.
Of course, hair care isn’t a one-size-fits-all thing. If shampooing your hair makes you happy, don’t let anyone stop you from using your favorite brands, but be sure you’re not doing it too often. Otherwise, you could end up with a dry, itchy scalp.
Besides frequent hair washing, there are other mistakes with hair care you need to avoid. Here are six of them.
Table of Contents
1. Using Hot Water for Hair Washing
Some people prefer hot showers because high temperatures help them relax. The problem is, hair and super hot water aren’t the best of friends.
Not only can washing your hair in hot water damage your scalp, but it can also result in dandruff. If you can’t stop this hair care routine cold turkey, try decreasing the temperature of your hot water shower bit by bit. You want to get to the point where you’re okay rinsing your hair in lukewarm water.
If you can stand cold water, though, that’s better. Rinsing off your hair in cold water will help seal the cuticles, locking in moisture.
2. Blow Drying or Using Hot Styling Tools Daily
Different hairstyles are easier to achieve with hot styling tools. Unfortunately, if you use a blow dryer, curler, straightener every day, they’ll zap the moisture out of your hair.
That’s why it’s better to invest in cuts that look great when air-dried. Switching to better hair care products also works, more so if they can decrease your reliance on hot styling tools.
3. Not Conditioning Hair Properly
Some people think conditioners are supposed to be applied up to the roots of the hair.
Doing this, though, will cause product build-up and make the scalp itchy. If you follow the shampoo then conditioner routine, be sure to apply the latter on the tips only.
You can also invest in special cleansing conditioners if you want to try the co-washing method (i.e., using a conditioner to wash hair).
4. Towel Drying Hair
What’s so bad about drying hair with towels, you ask. Well, if you do it with a regular towel, it can cause breakages and dryness.
One option to avoid this is to switch to a satin hair towel. If you can’t let go of your towels, though, you can change the way you dry your hair. That means instead of rubbing your hair, use your towel to squeeze the water out gently.
5. Opting for Tight, High Ponytails
Yes, Ariana Grande’s ponytail is fantastic, but if you make yours too tight and high, the tension can cause your hair to break.
If ponytails are your thing, you can always go for looser styles. Also, the lower they are, the better. It would also help to let your hair down and not style it too much whenever you can.
6. Other Mistakes With Hair Care to Avoid
Other hair care mistakes to avoid are not keeping up with regular trims, sleeping with wet hair, and not using heat protectants.
While there seem to be too many hair care don’ts, remember that great hair takes time and effort. Keep avoiding these no-nos, and you’ll have locks to die for.
