Palm Beach activists call for county to move forward with proposed wage theft ordinance

Members of a religious coalition from Palm Beach county that supports a proposed wage theft ordinance has sent a letter to all the members of Palm Beach county commission asking members to move ahead with the measure.

The ordinance approved last year by the Miami-Dade county commission creates a resolution process for wage theft claims outside of court. Some supporters of the measure say it can help prevent employers from cheating workers out of pay they are owed by allowing workers to make claims without having to hire a lawyer.

Carol Bowen, director of government affairs for Florida’s Associated Builders and Contractors, confirmed yesterday that her organization is a member of a coalition of construction groups, with at least 30 members involved in all aspects of building and contracting, that supports the “Wage Protection” bill filed by state Rep. Tom Goodson, R-Titusville, and opposes a proposed Palm Beach County wage theft ordinance.

The Associated Builders and Contractors of Florida has launched a campaign to support the “Wage Protection” bill filed by state Rep. Tom Goodson, R-Titusville, which would override local wage theft ordinances like one in Miami-Dade County that aims to prevent employers from cheating workers out of pay they are owed.

Florida GOP officials differ on Miami-Dade wage theft ordinance

Miami-Dade County Commissioner Natacha Seijas, a strong supporter of the Miami-Dade county wage theft ordinance approved in February 2010, proclaimed Nov. 18 as a Day Against Wage Theft. This month, fellow Republican state Rep. Tom Goodson of Titusville filed a bill that would preempt any local wage theft ordinance. The bill says federal and state laws already protect workers and employers against wage theft.
