In deposition, ex-employee charges Florida congressman with wide variety of misdeeds

In a deposition given on Jan. 9 and obtained by The Florida Independent, a former employee of Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, alleges that he reported Buchanan to the U.S. government in 2008 for tax evasion and conspiracy to evade U.S. income tax, and that he has been in contact with federal officials about Buchanan.

Former Buchanan business partner files suit

Sam Kazran, a former business partner of Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, is filing suit against the lawmaker, alleging the congressman defrauded him and abused the offices of the court to silence Kazran “regarding numerous election laws which were knowingly violated by Buchanan during his run for public office.”

A stipulated order and consent judgment in an FEC investigation into a former business partner of Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, was filed yesterday, a sign that the case may be nearing its end. According to the filing, Buchanan’s one-time business partner, Sam Kazran, must pay $5,000 for “a non-knowing and non-willful violation of” an ethics rule against knowingly helping or assisting any person in making a campaign contribution in the name of another.

A report obtained by TPM Muckraker sheds lights on the FEC’s investigation into allegations about donations made to the 2006 and 2008 congressional campaigns of Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota. Though Buchanan himself wasn’t named in the FEC lawsuit, a car dealership he once owned (Hyundai of North Jacksonville) and his former business partner (Sam Kazran) were. Buchanan has long maintained his innocence but, according to the FEC report, some of the congressman’s statements “didn’t seem credible.”

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has launched a radio ad blitz as part of its “Drive for 25″ campaign — an effort to win back the House in 2012. One of the ads, which launched Nov. 4, specifically targets Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota, who is currently embroiled in a scandal dating back to his 2006 and 2008 congressional campaigns, during which he allegedly reimbursed employees who made donations to Vern Buchanan for Congress.

Herald: Department of Justice investigating Florida congressman

The Bradenton Herald is reporting that the federal Department of Justice has launched an investigation into Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-Sarasota. Buchanan has long been plagued with rumors that he violated campaign finance laws, but a former business partner and a car dealership the two once co-owned, however, took the brunt of those claims — eventually being fined nearly $68,000 for what the FEC called an “extensive and ongoing scheme.”
