Pembroke Pines moves to renegotiate immigration detention center contract

With more than 100 residents demanding a stop to the construction of an immigration detention center next to the city of Pembroke Pines, commissioners on Wednesday night approved a motion to renegotiate its contract with the town of Southwest Ranches to supply water and sewage to the detention center.

Detention Watch Network today launched its “Dignity, Not Detention” campaign, calling on Congress to repeal the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, which mandates the detention of undocumented immigrants. The law was signed by President Clinton 15 years ago this week.

Broward residents again protest proposed private immigration detention center

Residents of Southwest Ranches and Pembroke Pines, as well as immigrant advocates, gathered Thursday to once again voice their opposition to the construction of a privately run immigration detention center in Broward County.
