Report: $99 million spent in the dark in Florida

Despite the millions of dollars in independent expenditures flowing in to Florida from political committees, a new report shows that 100 percent of the money is being reported without any information regarding its target– i.e. what the money is actually being spent on.

Lobbying disclosure data shows Automated HealthCare’s ongoing influence

A new report by the Florida Current examines the earnings of top legislative lobbying firms in Florida, which have increased since last year. Among the companies to have spent the most on lobbying is Automated HealthCare Solutions, a group whose co-chairmen have become fixtures on the political scene. According to the Current, Automated HealthCare has posted minimum lobbying expenditures greater than $300,000.

Scott appoints new member to state Board of Education

Governor Rick Scott has appointed Gary R. Chartrand, executive chairman of Acosta Sales and Marketing, to the Florida state Board of Education. Chartrand was on Scott’s education transition team, which called for expanding vouchers and charter schools, as well as a “re-branding” of the state Department of Education.

On the cusp of winning the Republican nomination for governor in Florida, Rick Scott cracked a joke on primary night alluding to powerful interests in Florida that had aligned themselves with his opponent, Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum: “In Tallahassee tonight, the deal-makers are crying in their cocktails.”

Now those deal-makers — lobbyists, legislators and party fundraisers — are quickly teaming up with Scott to raise funds for his campaign and make an about-face on the man whom they spurned, attacked and campaigned against prior to Aug. 24.

While Tuesday’s Republican primary outcome is probably still in doubt, one thing is clear: Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum will be outspent by his self-funded opponent, former health care executive Rick Scott. Scott and his 527 group have spent almost $40 million on his campaign, while the McCollum campaign has spent about $10 million.

But a 527 group associated with McCollum, the Florida First Initiative, has collected big donations from big industries in recent weeks, helping the attorney general place TV ads as his battle with Scott comes down to the wire.
