Sharia law bill dies as Florida’s legislative session ends

A controversial bill aimed at restricting the “application of foreign law” (specifically Sharia law) in courts in Florida died on the floor of the state Senate late last Friday night, as the 2012 Legislative session came to a close.

The Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations is denouncing a bill that would regulate the “application of foreign law in certain cases,” set to be heard in a House committee meeting tomorrow. The group says the bill is anti-religion, and specifically anti-Islam.

The New York Times recently profiled David Yerushalmi, “The Man Behind the Anti-Shariah Movement,” whose efforts have several Florida ties. For one thing, he’s a South Florida native, according to the article. For another, he was the driving force behind an anti-Sharia law that surfaced in Florida and other states.
